WKF Junior Championships Spain 2013

Local Lisburn School boy and NIKW Kumite Champion has returned from the recent World Karate Federation Junior championships in Guadalajara, Spain with a very good record, in the championships. Ryan recently took Bronze medal in the British Open championships, aimed to improve his standing in the worlds elite Karate-Ka arena, and to gain some vital world class experience.

WKF Junior Spain 2013The opening rounds kicked off, on the 8th November, and Ryan’s first bout was against a very experienced Scotland teenager, El Shafei. Ryan imposed himself from the start sweeping the opponent aside with a comfortable 8 – 0 win. A much tougher opponent was up next from Libya, Mr A Derwesh. This was a close round and with very good tactical foot work Craig edged the win with a solid point.
Craigs reward for the win was a final 16 bout with World Number 1 from Turkey Mr Macar. Ryan used all his experience and top class tuition in the NIKW and Sensei Brunton to push his opponent all the way. Both competitors displayed excellent skill resulting in a 1:1 draw. Competition rules dictate this goes to “Hantei” and the judges must make a decision. They awarded a Turkish win.
Ryan was pleased to have gave a good account of himself and took away experience at the elite level, which will stand him in good stead for the future. Craig is a regular student of the NIKW Central dojo in Belfast along with other experienced Karate-Ka in the NIKW, who are lucky to study under the vast experience of Sensei Brunton 7th Dan.
